The Ghana Black Stars were denied a winning start under Carlos Queiroz in their international friendly game against Wales on Tuesday night. The Black Stars were held to a 1-1 draw at a sparsely populated Cardiff City Stadium as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

Wales dominated the first hour of the game, but were wasteful in front of goal. The hosts paid for their inability to take chances when substitute Caleb Yirenkyi scored the opening goal to the delight of Ghana’s exuberant fans. However, Wales struck back in the third minute of added time, when Lewis Koumas nodded in his first international goal from Neco Williams’ cross.
It was a third game without a victory for Craig Bellamy’s men who missed out on World Cup qualification by losing to Bosnia-Herzegovina at the same ground in March. However, Ghana will walk away with a confident draw despite the disappointment of squandering their lead.

The Black Stars have lost five successive games before going to Wales. A draw will serve as a confidence booster for Queiroz’ men, who take on football powerhouses like England and Croatia in Group L. First, they face Panama in their opening game on June 17 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
