Mohammed Sofo ‘hurt’ by pre-season injury, ready to prove to NY Red Bulls coach

Ghanaian forward Mohammed Sofo has expressed frustration over the injury that disrupted his start to the new season in the MLS with New York Red Bulls.

The NY Red Bulls forward missed the opening three matches of the 2026 campaign following a knock in pre-season, but has now recovered and played in Red Bulls’ last three games.

Sofo opened his season’s account with a sensational strike in the 4-2 victory over FC Cincinnati last Sunday.

Although he has been an important figure for the New York club, the 21-year-old has seen only 110 minutes of football under new manager Michael Bradley.

“Honestly, I think there is no professional soccer player who would like to start the season injured,” he told Seeing Red NY. “So it was difficult because coming into this year for me, I was ready to prove to the fans like yeah I will always give my best to the fans.

“I start pre-season very well, healthy, and getting my rhythm in shape. I was in good form until I got injured which is part of the game I understand but it still hurts me a lot,” he added.

Sofo also disclosed that he has a lot to prove to the coach as he gradually makes his way back into the starting line up.

“Coming back to trying to prove to the coach, I think you never stop proving yourself. One thing I have learnt at this stage is that, there shouldn’t be a time you feel like okay, there is nothing to prove,” he continued.

The talented forward moved to the United States in 2023 from Malian outfit Guidars FC on an initial loan deal before inking a permanent contract.
