It’s a privilege and honour to be Black Stars head coach – Carlos Queiroz

Veteran trainer Carlos Queiroz has described his appointment as Black Stars head coach as a privilege to be part of the Ghana football family. 

The 73-year-old has replaced Otto Addo on a four-month deal and will lead the senior national team to the 2026 World Cup this summer.

Queiroz was officially unveiled on Thursday in Accra at the Alisa Hotel. Before his unveiling, the former Manchester United assistant coach was introduced to the Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, at the Sports Ministry.

Addressing the media, the Portuguese gaffer expressed his gratitude, adding that it is a privilege to be part of the Ghana football family.

“I just want to say thank you. I just want to express how I feel inside my heart now,” Queiroz said.

“To be part of Ghana’s sports and family is a privilege and honour for me. I know that some of you know that I have strong African roots.

“I was born and raised in Mozambique, and so leading Ghana, an African country, to the World Cup is unforgettable and a memory in my life,” the former Real Madrid head coach added.

Ghana, who are making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, face a daunting challenge in Group L, where they have been drawn against England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022, expectations will be high for a more competitive showing this time, with Queiroz tasked with steering the four-time African champions beyond the early rounds.
