The Tarkwa and Aboso (TnA) Stadium has received a major boost after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) granted the venue Category 2 Stadium Approval, making it eligible to host CAF Youth and Women’s National Team qualifying matches, as well as Preliminary Round fixtures of CAF Interclub competitions.

The approval, announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), marks a significant milestone for Ghana football and paves the way for Medeama SC to host their 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Preliminary Round matches in Tarkwa for the first time in the club’s history, subject to CAF’s final confirmation in line with its competition regulations.
The landmark achievement is the culmination of the collective efforts of the Ghana Football Association, Medeama Sporting Club, the stadium management and other key stakeholders, whose commitment to upgrading the facility has ensured it meets CAF’s required infrastructure standards.
For Medeama and their supporters, the approval represents a historic breakthrough, allowing the reigning Ghana Premier League champions to enjoy home advantage on the continental stage instead of playing their preliminary fixtures away from Tarkwa.

CAF’s approval, communicated to GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, is accompanied by a number of operational conditions designed to enhance safety, comfort and the overall matchday experience for players, match officials, spectators, media and other stakeholders.
The governing body has also directed that a few minor observations identified during the technical inspection be addressed before the stadium hosts its next CAF competition fixture, with the Ghana Football Association and its partners committed to ensuring full compliance within the agreed timelines.
The Category 2 certification is another important step in Ghana’s ongoing efforts to improve football infrastructure and expand the country’s capacity to host continental competitions, while reinforcing the GFA’s commitment to delivering world-class football facilities across the nation.
