Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has praised goalkeeper Benjamin Asare following his outstanding performance against England, describing the shot-stopper as one of the key reasons behind the Black Stars’ recent success.
Asare was one of Ghana’s standout performers as Carlos Queiroz’s side held England to a goalless draw in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper produced several crucial interventions during the contest, most notably a brilliant late save to deny England captain Harry Kane.
Moments later, Ghana received another lifeline when Nico O’Reilly’s header struck the crossbar.
Speaking after the match, Gyan highlighted Asare’s calmness and positional awareness as qualities that have made him a reliable figure for the national team.
“Benjamin Asare is very composed. Wherever he is, you can see the ball comes there,” Gyan said.
The former Ghana captain also pointed to the goalkeeper’s contribution during the World Cup qualifying campaign, insisting his performances have been vital to the Black Stars’ progress.
“He kept Ghana alive so many times in the qualifiers,” Gyan added.
Asare has continued that form on football’s biggest stage. After replacing the injured Lawrence Ati-Zigi during Ghana’s opening victory over Panama, the goalkeeper has seized his opportunity with both hands.
His assured displays have helped Ghana become one of only a handful of teams yet to concede a goal at the 2026 World Cup.
The Black Stars followed a 1-0 win over Panama with a clean sheet against England, placing themselves in a strong position ahead of their final group fixture.
Gyan’s endorsement carries significant weight given his status as Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and one of the country’s most celebrated footballers.
His comments reflect the growing confidence surrounding Asare, who has emerged as one of Ghana’s breakthrough performers at the tournament.
With a place in the knockout stages within reach, Ghana will once again look to Asare for inspiration when they face Croatia in their final Group L match.
