The officials who oversaw Ghana’s controversial goalless draw with England are likely to remain under scrutiny after the Black Stars were denied what many believed was a clear second-half penalty.
Honduran referee Said Martinez took charge of the Group L encounter at Boston Stadium, with Mexican official Guillermo Pacheco serving as Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Their decisions have become a major talking point following an incident involving Ghana substitute Prince Kwabena Adu and England defender Ezri Konsa.
With the match delicately poised, Adu burst into the England penalty area before appearing to be brought down by Konsa. Ghana’s players immediately appealed for a penalty, but Martinez waved away the claims.
More significantly, VAR official Pacheco chose not to recommend an on-field review, allowing play to continue.
The decision sparked anger among Ghana’s players and coaching staff, with Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz delivering a scathing assessment after the match.
“We had opportunities to win it, and I’m not sure if VAR is still working. It was a clear penalty,” Queiroz said.
The incident has placed Martinez and Pacheco firmly in the spotlight.
Before the match, Martinez arrived with a growing reputation within CONCACAF football. The 34-year-old has officiated Gold Cup finals, Nations League finals and more than 160 professional matches during his career.
However, the Ghana-England encounter was unfamiliar territory. Martinez had never previously officiated either nation and had never taken charge of a match involving an African national team.
While referees inevitably face criticism after contentious decisions, the frustration among Ghana supporters stems from the potential consequences of the call.
A successful penalty could have given Ghana victory over England and secured automatic qualification for the Round of 32 with a game to spare.
Instead, the Black Stars were forced to settle for a point, leaving qualification to be decided in their final group match against Croatia.
Attention has understandably focused on Martinez, who made the on-field decision, but VAR official Pacheco has also faced questions.
The purpose of VAR is to correct clear and obvious errors. For many watching, the biggest surprise was not that the penalty was initially missed, but that the incident was not reviewed.
As Ghana prepare for their decisive clash with Croatia, the debate over the actions of Martinez and Pacheco continues.
