Carlos Queirozโ€™s tactical discipline helped Ghana earn a vital goalless draw against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and move within touching distance of the round of 32.

The Black Stars were under pressure for long periods at Boston Stadium, but they defended with organisation, bravery and concentration to deny one of the tournament favourites.

England dominated possession, produced 19 shots and forced Ghana to spend much of the match inside their own half, but Queirozโ€™s side refused to lose their shape.

The result leaves Ghana on four points from two matches in Group L, level with England and ahead of their final group match against Croatia.

A point against Croatia on 27 June will be enough to take Ghana into the knockout stage.

For Queiroz, who took charge of Ghana only a few months before the World Cup, this was a statement result.

It showed that the Black Stars are quickly absorbing his ideas and can compete against elite opposition through structure, sacrifice and tactical maturity.

Ghanaโ€™s compact shape blocks England

Queiroz set Ghana up to frustrate England, and his plan worked.

The Black Stars defended in a compact shape, denying England space in central areas and forcing Thomas Tuchelโ€™s team to move the ball from side to side without much penetration.

England had plenty of possession in the first half but created very little.

Declan Riceโ€™s looping header over the crossbar was one of the few moments of concern before the break.

Ghanaโ€™s midfield worked tirelessly, while the defensive line remained disciplined and refused to be dragged out of position.

Queirozโ€™s team were happy to let England have the ball in safe areas, but they closed down quickly whenever the ball entered dangerous zones.

It was a performance built on patience.

Ghana did not chase England recklessly. They waited, shifted together and made the pitch feel crowded whenever England tried to accelerate.

Black Stars show defensive character

Benjamin Asare was one of Ghanaโ€™s key performers, making important saves in the second half when England finally began to threaten.

Anthony Gordon fired straight into the goalkeeperโ€™s body, before Harry Kane saw a low effort kept out.

Asareโ€™s calmness gave confidence to the players in front of him.

Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku and Gideon Mensah stood up to Englandโ€™s pressure, blocking crosses, winning duels and clearing danger when the match became stretched.

Ghana also showed huge mental strength late in the game.

England came closest in the 87th minute when Reece James crossed for Nico Oโ€™Reilly, whose back-post header struck the crossbar.

The rebound fell to Kane, but the England captain sent his effort high over the bar.

Marc Guehi also had a stoppage-time header cleared close to the line as Ghana survived the final push.

But survival was not luck alone.

It was the result of the defensive habits Queiroz has built into the team.

Counter-attacking threat keeps England worried

Although Ghana defended for much of the match, they were not without attacking ambition.

Queirozโ€™s plan was not only to stop England, but also to use pace and direct running when the chance came.

The clearest Ghana opportunity arrived with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Prince Kwabena Adu was sent through on Jordan Pickford and almost gave the Black Stars a famous lead.

Ezri Konsa recovered to block the first attempt, before Adu’s follow-up was stopped close to the line by team-mate Antoine Semenyo.

It was a huge moment and a reminder that Ghanaโ€™s threat on the break was real.

Englandโ€™s Jude Bellingham later admitted Ghana kept โ€œthat little bit of fearโ€ in England whenever they attacked.

That was exactly what Queiroz would have wanted.

Even while defending deep, Ghana carried enough pace and power to stop England from committing completely forward.

A point that feels bigger for Ghana

For England, the draw was frustrating because they expected to build on their opening 4-2 win over Croatia.

For Ghana, it was another step towards qualification after their opening victory over Panama.

The Black Stars have now kept clean sheets in both of their matches and remain unbeaten.

That defensive record will please Queiroz, whose tournament experience has often been built on making teams difficult to beat.

Ghana may not have produced the most attacking performance, but they produced the kind of result that matters at a World Cup.

Tournament football is about points, control, discipline and survival.

Queiroz knows that better than most.

Croatia now becomes Ghanaโ€™s biggest test

Ghana will enter their final group match with their destiny in their own hands.

A draw against Croatia will secure qualification, while a win could strengthen their position further.

But Queiroz will also know that Croatia will pose a different challenge from England.

Ghana may need more control on the ball and more precision in attack.

Still, the performance against England gives the Black Stars belief.

They have shown they can absorb pressure, stay focused and frustrate one of the strongest squads in the tournament.

For African football, Ghanaโ€™s point was more than a defensive result.

It was proof that tactical discipline, belief and organisation can make the continentโ€™s teams difficult opponents on the biggest stage.

Queiroz has given Ghana structure.

Now the Black Stars are one result away from turning that structure into World Cup progress.
