Vinicius Jr was born Vinícius José Paixão de Oliveira Júnior on July 12, 2000 in  São Gonçalo. Coming from a humble Catholic background, he began playing football at the age of six and later joined Flamengo youth academy.

Vini, as he is fondly called, also played Futsal in his childhood, which helped develop his quick feet, balance and creativity.

Club career

Vinicius Jr began his professional football career at Flamengo, one of the biggest football clubs in Brazil. He made his senior debut in 2017 at the age of 16, and extended his contract with the club from 2019 until 2022. His contract included a buyout clause increase from €30 million to €45 million, which was attributed to his move to Real Madrid.

At Flamengo, Vinicius Jr made over 50 appearances, scoring 11 goals, and cementing his name as one of the rising young talents in world football.

Rise to stardom at Real Madrid

In 2018, Vinicius Jr made a high profile transfer to Real Madrid for around €45 million, making him one of the most expensive teenage signings in history. His early years at Madrid was reportedly challenging as he had to adapt to a new culture, language and playing style.

However, he found his breakthrough during the 2021-22 season, when he formed a partnership with teammate Karim Benzema. He also scored the winning goal to help Madrid lift the UEFA Champions League 2022 title.

Vinicius Jr was first called up to represent Brazil at the under-15 Championship in 2015. He won the tournament with the team, and was the 2nd top-scorer of the tournament with seven goals. In addition, he was also named the  player of the tournament.

Vinicius Jr also represented Brazil in the under-17 team before getting a senior call up in 2019. He also featured in the 2022 World Cup where Brazil was eliminated after a 4-2 penalty shootout against Croatia in the quarterfinals. Vini also featured in two Copa America tournaments, where he helped the team reach the final in 2021 while Brazil was eliminated in the 2024 tournament quarterfinals in his absence.

Vinicius Jr enjoys a luxurious lifestyle of a global football star. He owns luxury cars, live in high-end properties and partners with top brands. Some of his brand endorsements include Pepsi, Nike, EA Sports and Lego. He featured in a Lego World Cup ad, alongside superstars Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Real Madrid teammate, Kylian Mbappe ahead of the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup.

Vinicius Jr is the son of Vinícius José Paixão de Oliveira, a construction worker. His mother’s name is Fernanda who took care of him and his three siblings while his father worked. Vini is the oldest of four siblings, including a brother named Netinho and a sister named Alessandra.

Off the pitch, Vinicius Jr is heavily involved in activism, particularly anti-racism. He has been a victim of racial abuse in several instances. In 2023, he condemned La Liga for what he saw as normalizing racist behaviors and advocated for stricter measures to combat future occurrences.

Numerous sports and political figures, including Formula 1 icon Lewis Hamilton, coaches Xavi and Carlo Ancelotti, and pundit Rio Ferdinand, among others, have supported his cause.
