Salah to captain Egypt as World Cup squad announced

Mohamed Salah is set to captain Egypt at the World Cup this summer after he was named in the preliminary 27-man squad. Salah, who will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, has been one of the Pharoahs’ outstanding players with  67 goals in 115 appearances for the national team.

He will be joined by Manchester City winger Omar Marmoush and 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim, who plays for Barcelona Under-19s. Nantes forward Mostafa Mohamed has been left out and one more player will be dropped after a friendly against Russia in Cairo on May 28, in line with FIFA’s mandated maximum 26 players for the World Cup.

Egypt will play Brazil in a friendly in Cleveland six on 6 June. The Pharoahs will play their opener against Belgium on 15 June, before taking on  New Zealand on 22 June and Iran on 27 June in Goup G.

The expanded 48-team 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to hold in the US, Canada and Mexico runs from 11 June to 19 July.
