Man Utd’s De Ligt to miss World Cup after back surgery

Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has joined a growing list of elite players who will miss the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup. De Ligt will not be in the Netherlands squad after succumbing to surgery for a long-standing back problem.

The Dutch defender has not played a game for United since the victory at Crystal Palace in November last year. Then-United manager Ruben Amorim said it was a minor issue and expected him to be back as the team face West Ham four days later. However, that did not happen and current United interim manager Michael Carrick had said the 26-year-old did not need a surgery.

But De Ligt’s most recent attempt at running on Carrington’s training pitches last month was a cause for concern.

“Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury,” said a United statement.

“Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action.”

United also said they do not expect De Ligt to be back until the “early stages of the 2026-27 season”, effectively ruling him out of this summer’s World Cup. He may also be uavailable for the Red Devils’ preseason tour to Helsinki to face Wrexham on 18 July. But he may possibly travel with the remainder of United’s squad to continue his rehabilitation work.

“Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football,” said De Ligt.

“I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career.

“I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, the Netherlands will start their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 14 at the Dallas Stadium, Arlington, Texas, USA.
