Two first half goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko saw United take the lead. But they squandered it following Liverpool’s comeback in the second half. However, Mainoo fired from the edge of the box to make it 3-2 and win it for United.
Following the game, the youngster spoke to Sky Sports about his previous struggles at Old Trafford and how he and his teammates want to fight for interim manager Michael Carrick.
On the 3-2 win against Liverpool, he said: “To turn it around the way we have done, it’s a credit to the players and the manager. We are just looking forward and still need to finish the season strong. We want to just keep on winning and winning.”
On his winner, Mainoo said: “”I’ve not been around the goals too much but happy to be around it in this game, such a special occasion and special fixture.”
Kobbie Mainoo struggled for playing time under former United manager Ruben Amorim and almost forced a loan move away from England. However, he recently signed a five-year contract to remain at Old Trafford and has been thriving under Carrick.
“It was difficult, of course, any time you’re not playing football,” Mainoo said about his struggles under Amorim. “I just tried to look forward as much as possible, keep working hard and keep my head down to get these things from it.”
The 21-year-old described the United legend’s impact in the team.
“It’s clearly a huge part. The confidence in not just me but all the players. You want to follow him and fight for him. That’s what we showed today.”
United’s latest Champions League qualification now puts Carrick in a strong position as a frontrunner for the coaching role at Old Trafford.
