Mauricio Pochettino has expressed sadness watching his former club, Tottenham Hotspur, fight against relegation from the Premier League. Pochettino led Spurs for five years, during which the North London side finished second in the league in 2016-17 and reached the Champions League final in 2019.

However, circumstances are drastically different for Spurs now, as the club currently sits 18th, two points away from relegation with four games remaining in the league this season.
On The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, Pochettino said: “It’s really sad, I really love Tottenham, it’s going to be a part of my life, an important part of my life as a coach, my personal life too. It’s really sad because I know how the people are suffering there, inside the club and also the fans. It’s difficult to accept.”
Pochettino also revealed Tottenham’s inability to sign quality players during his time as manager was a “missed last step” to win. He named Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum as two players he had wanted to sign for the club. But they both joined Liverpool and were part of the Red team to beat Spurs 2-0 in the Champions League final.
The United States national football team manager said Spurs’ inability to sign players was due to limited transfer funds as the club was focused on building its current stadium and training ground. The Spurs team also had to play home games at Wembley.
Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently preparing the US team for this summer’s World Cup, also expressed his desire to return to the Premier League. But he did not specifically mention Tottenham as his desired destination.
