Morocco has officially become the highest-scoring African nation in FIFA World Cup history. The Atlas Lions achieved this historic milestone following a thrilling 4-2 comeback victory against Haiti in their final Group C match at the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Atlanta.
The win elevated Moroccoโs all-time tournament total to 26 goals across 26 matches, allowing them to surpass Nigeriaโs long-standing record of 23 goals to claim sole possession of continental goalscoring supremacy.
The historic milestone was achieved during a dramatic match at the Atlanta Stadium, where the Atlas Lions had to fight back after trailing twice in the first half.
An early own-goal from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and a stunning strike by Haitiโs Wilson Isidor twice put Morocco on the back foot. However, defensive resilience and attacking flair allowed the squad to pull off an unprecedented turnaround.
Team captain Achraf Hakimi sparked the initial recovery, reacting quickly inside the six-yard box to score Moroccoโs first goal. Shortly before the halftime whistle, midfielder Ismael Saibari leveled the score at 2-2.
In doing so, Saibari secured a personal milestone as the first Moroccan player to find the back of the net in consecutive World Cup group-stage appearances.
The second half belonged entirely to Moroccoโs tactical depth, with late substitutions completely shifting the gameโs momentum. Forward Soufiane Rahimi broke the deadlock in the 77th minute, firing a deflected effort into the top corner to put Morocco ahead for the first time.
In the final minutes of normal time, substitute Gessime Yassine rounded off the scoring, bringing the final scoreline to 4-2. This marked the first time in history that Morocco has scored four goals in a single World Cup match.
Morocco also set a new milestone by becoming the first African team to go undefeated in six consecutive group-stage matches across multiple World Cup editions.
The Atlas Lions finished Group C with 7 points, tied with Brazil but placing second on goal difference.
The four-goal explosion explicitly reshaped the historical rankings of African football on the global stage. Moroccoโs 26 goals broke a tie with Cameroon and pushed past Nigeria, who had held the record despite not participating in the current tournament.
Behind Moroccoโs 26 goals, Nigeria drops to second with 23 goals from 21 matches, followed closely by Cameroon with 22 goals from 26 games. Senegal and Ghana sit tied for fourth, both possessing 19 goals. While Morocco leads in total volume, Senegal maintains the highest goals-per-match efficiency rating on the continent, netting their 19 goals in just 14 total matches.
