Bruno Fernandes has broken the Premier League assist record to justify why he claimed the Player of the Season award. The Portugal international registered two assists and a goal in Manchester United’s 3-0 home win over Brighton Hove & Avion on final day.
After equalling the 20 assists record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne against Nottingham Forest last week, Fernandes  first-half corner to Patrick Dorgu’s thunderous strike to claim the record on his own.
Then the 31-year-old further extended the record with a second assist for Bryan Mbeumo before drilling home a third goal for United in early second half.
“It’s great. I feel very happy for that. It’s a very proud moment. Obviously, it’s not what I was thinking about until I got this close. Today, I was lucky enough to get that,” Fernandes told Sky Sports after the game.
“Jonny [Evans] believed more in me for that set-piece that we prepared for Patrick [Dorgu]. I wasn’t sure Patrick was able to score with his head. He did, and at the end of the day, I got my assist from that, and I’m very happy. The most important thing is that we won today and we finished strong.”
This was also Michael Carrick’s 12th victory in 17 games and his first since taking on a permanent coaching role for United. Brighton, who came into the game with hopes of clinching a Champions League spot, will now settle for the European Conference League after finishing seventh in the league.
