Arsenal move closer to winning Premier League with nervy win at Burnley

Arsenal are currently close to winning their first Premier League title in decades after a narrow 1-0 victory over relegation-bound Burnley on Monday night. The game was far from pretty, but the Gunners held their nerves and ensured they walked away with all three points to stay at the top of the table.

Kai Havertz scored a towering header  from Bukayo Saka’s corner shortly before half-time. He was fortunate not to be sent off later in the game, which would have put a dent in Arsenal’s plans to stay ahead of their closest rivals, Manchester City.

Before Havertz’ winner, the Gunners thought they had a penalty in the 34th minute when Saka went down in the six-yard box. However, replays showed he had connected with Lucas Pires’ leg as he went to shoot, prompting VAR’s decision not to overturn the no penalty decision.

In the second half, Arsenal seemed to lose their spark, from Eberechi Eze squandering two big openings in the space of two minutes in the early start to the half to Havertz almost getting a red card for his foul on Lesley Ugochukwu. The German forward had stuck his foot on the back of Ugochukwu’s leg but referee Paul Tierney and VAR did not deem it serious enough to warrant a red.

Arsenal finally claimed a vital three points after a nervy conclusion to the game. All eyes will now be on Pep Guardiola’s Man City as they face  Bournemouth on Tuesday. The Gunners will lift the Premier League title if City drop points against the Cherries, who are on a 16-game unbeaten run. Otherwise, the winner will be determined on final day when Arsenal meet Crystal Palace, while City face Aston Villa.
