Kobbie Mainoo scored a dramatic winner for Manchester United to see off Liverpool comeback attempt and book a spot in the Champions League next season. United beat Liverpool 3-2 in an epic Premier League game at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Matheus Cunha’s gave the hosts an early lead with a deflected left-footed shot, while Benjamin Sesko made it 2-0 from a Bruno Fernandes assist. However, the Red Devils squandered their advantage in the second half, as Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai took advantage of Amad Diallo’s mistake to score a fine solo goal. Then Cody Gakpo levelled things up from another United mistake, this time from Senne Lammens’ poor kick.
At this point, it was anybody’s game until Mainoo stepped up for the Red Devils and delivered a fiery shot on the edge of the box and win the game. Mainoo, who had been frozen out of the team by Ruben Amorim, recently signed a new deal with United until 2031.
Sunday’s win means United will be at the Champions League next season, as they tighten their third spot on the league table. Liverpool remain fourth and will have to work hard to maintain the European qualification spot.
Meanwhile, United legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson missed the game was when he was taken from the ground in an ambulance as a precaution after reportedly feeling unwell.
